He puts his cheek against mine

and makes small expressive sounds.

And when I'm awake, or awake enough

he turns upside down, his four paws in the air

and his eyes dark and fervent.

Tell me you love me, he says.

Tell me again.

Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over

he gets to ask it.

I get to tell.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, "Stay awhile."

The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, "It's simple," they say,

"and you too have come into the world to do this, to go easy,

to be filled with light, and to shine."

"The sun shines not on us but in us. The river flows not past, but through us. Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing. My dog and I do not speak the same language.

Yet every day, she tells me:

I trust you to know when I need to go for a walk.

I will let you hold me when you need to

and I will ask you for love when I need it.

On the days you are sick, I will lie beside you.

I will look for you in rooms when you are not here,

and I will greet you with so much joy when you come home.

I will guard you when you sleep.

I will wag my tail and let you know that everything will be okay on  your bad days,

and I know that you will do the same on mine.

And from this I learn that my dog and I do actually speak the same language.

After all, the universe is a kindly ancient thing.

It gave love as a mother tongue to every little being.

​

In Hawaiian culture, you do not call yourself a pet "owner." You are referred to as their "Kahu." This means you are their sacred guardian, protector and entrusted with something so precious. A Kahu does not protect property, rather a cherished part of their soul. When we embrace the connection of all life, we embody what it means to be a Kahu. 

"Hope" is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all.

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

It is a kind of love, is it not?

How the cup holds the tea,

How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,

How the floor receives the bottom of shoes or toes.

How soles of the feet know where they're supposed to be.

I've been thinking about the patience

Of ordinary things,

How clothes wait respectfully in closets

And soap dries quickly in the dish,

And towels drink the wet from the skin of the back.

And the lovely repetition of stairs.

And what is more generous than a window? 

The soul sits at the intersection of time and timelessness,

At the junction of dreams and waking life.

Each night it shapes a bridge,

Intended to bring the two worlds closer,

So that the divine might pour into the mundane,

And the unseen might help us to see.
